In Texas, Dental Assistants are required to register with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) within the first year on the job, if they are taking X-rays.  This registration is called Registered Dental Assistant (RDA).  Upon registration the assistant may add the RDA credential after their name.

There is also a National certification for Dental Assistants.  This certification is the responsibility of the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB).  DANB certification (CDA) is very similar to the TSBDE registration and it is nationally recognized, but not required.  Dental Assistants with a current DANB certification are still required to register with the State Board of Dental Examiners.  Dental Assistants with CDA certification may add the CDA credential after their name.

         DETAILS of REGISTRATIONS and CERTIFICATIONS:

For Dental Assistants with no DANB CDA Credential:
Dental Assistants who have not received education, testing and credentialing from the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) must take and pass one of the SBDE-approved one day courses for Dental Assistants that covers Jurisprudence, Infection Control and Radiology.  Once a dental assistant has taken and passed one of the courses approved by the SBDE they may then apply for registration with the SBDE.  A list of approved registration one day courses is available at the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners website: www.tsbde.state.tx.us.

For Dental Assistants who maintain a current DANB CDA Credential:
Certified Dental Assistants who maintain a current CDA credential issued by DANB are required to complete the SBDE Jurisprudence Assessment offered at the website listed below.  A copy of the Jurisprudence Assessment Certificate of Completion must be submitted with the Registration Application.  Important Notes:  1) The Jurisprudence Assessment Certificate of Completion must be dated within the preceding 12 months of making application to the SBDE.  2) Jurisprudence Assessment results are only valid for one year.  3) The cost to take the Jurisprudence Assessment is $55.00 (Non-Refundable) Click on this link to purchase the SBDE Jurisprudence Assessment:  http://www.esslearning.com/tsbde

There is a very common question or confusion factor regarding the State accredited or approved courses for Dental Assistants.

The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners approved Dental Assistant course providers are those schools approved by the TSBDE to administer the one day course for the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) credential.

The course offered by VIP Dental Training Center is an eleven Saturdays course designed to teach the skills required to be an entry level Dental Assistant.  At the completion of our course the graduate is prepared to attend the TSBDE required, one day, registration course, or the Dental Assistant National Board, one day, certification course.
